Welcome to Starfleet is a interaction/character-development based Star Trek RPG set in the year 2391 using TV-canon with a TNG era feel. We provide a great setting for exploring and enjoying your characters' daily lives as well as the ability to progress your character through their career from a playable Starfleet Academy experience all the way up to becoming a Captain and running your own ship.

How to begin on WtS
If you have not done so yet, please read through our Site Summary first!
Welcome to Starfleet was first opened in February 2011 in its original form, Infinity. It is a role-play and interaction-focused RPG (interaction meaning day-to-day life, work-related RP, friendships, romance, etc.) combined with a very simple leveling system for commissioned and enlisted officers that is based on activity and posting.
Please read through our site rules before moving forward.
Member Age. Members must be 18 years old or older to join and RP on WtS due to mature content.
Register. Register with the first and last name of your character (capitalized normally). Do not include their rank, title, middle name, nickname, or any initials.
Background Information. We take our canon information from Memory-Alpha, Memory-Beta, and, depending on the article, some wikipedia.com pages. We do not accept canon from the majority of other sources. Do NOT take information from other RPGs, fansites, or Sims.
WIPS. Please do not submit Work-In-Progress applications. We ask that you save them elsewhere and post them only when they are fully completed. [/b]
Original Characters. WtS is an original character RPG and all characters must be your own creation and should not know, be related to, or have a similar name as any canon character.
Character Slots Players may create 2 characters at any time. After that they may create 1 character per month or purchase a character slot from the site store for 5000 credits.
Cadet Slots. Players may have up to one character per year at Starfleet Academy. This means you can have up to 4 characters at Starfleet Academy at any given time and one must be progressed to the next level before you can move another into their year.
Character Names. Characters cannot use the first or last name of any prominent Star Trek character. Characters may not have the full name of (or very similar to) any well known character from a fandom or something clearly taken from a fandom. Names must always reflect the species the character comes from, using their canon naming conventions (if applicable). Alien names may not sound too similar to names, words, mythology, etc. of any human language. [Note: There are several characters who have been on the site since before we had naming convention rules and therefore you may see some alien characters who have been on wts for years with human names (or similar).]
Unique Names. Characters may not have the same first or last name as any other character on the site unless they are related to that character. As there are an infinite amount of options given that made up names are encouraged, we feel this is entirely reasonable.
Hybrids. Human hybrids are not allowed at this time, as we find that it encourages people to rely too heavily on playing them like a human. Alien/alien hybrids can be found in the site shop.
Earth born/raised. Only humans may be born or raised on Earth. Again, it results in aliens being primarily played with human traits, thus essentially resulting in a human with alien powers.
Available Species. The species available for new characters may change and are listed in the Species information.
Character Age. Characters must be 18 or older.
Consequences. All in-character actions will be handled in character, and in-character misbehavior can be punished in-character.
Mature Boards. All mature threads - either violent or sexual - must be marked with an [M] in the title. A note in QUOTE tags at the beginning of the thread with warnings as to the nature of the threads (i.e. roughness, torture, bdsm, m/f, m/m, f/f, etc) is highly encouraged, but not required. Please avoid these threads if you may find yourself offended by the content. Threads of particularly gory or graphic violence should be marked with a [V]. Threads of a particularly explicit sexual nature should be marked with an [X]. Any level of violence or sexually explicit RP is allowed so long as all parties in the thread give consent ahead of time.
Illness & Death. Your character can get sick and will be treated and healed in the sickbay or the infirmary if they do. It is rare that we will allow characters to be killed off and will never do so when someone is leaving the site. Often during dangerous plots we will allow people to kill off their characters and will let you know when such opportunities occur. We do not allow persistent injuries or illnesses that require regular oversight of a medic or counselor in order for one's character to do their job (in these cases they are 'unfit for duty').
Children. Children under the age of 18 are not currently allowed as played characters on the site, but may be referenced and incorporated into the roleplays of their parents/guardians. They may not in any case be involved in a Mature thread, even indirectly.
Member Activity. Inactive accounts will be deleted, usually without warning. Accounts are considered inactive after 90 days without an in-character post. Activity deletions are done roughly monthly at the end/beginning of the month.
Avatars. Your avatar should be a direct visual representation of your character that matches the description given in your application. It can be a real person, an anime character, a drawing, etc. but it must pictorially represent your character as well as their species. Your avatar must be 250px wide by 440px tall. Visit shops if you need assistance with manips, finding an appropriate image for your character, or resize help. NOTE: If your avatar is the incorrect size, not of your character, or inappropriate, the admins reserve the right to change it without warning.
Gif. Gifs should be roughly square in dimension to look right and must be of your character.
Signatures.. You are allowed to choose any non-explicit graphics you would like, but your signature should not be more than 200 pixels tall or 500 wide to keep things neat.
Look-ALikes/PlayBys. You may use an image, real person, or illustration to represent your character so long as:
The images you use are not of any distinct Star Trek character.
No one else has claimed the person or character in the Face Claim list.
Any real person is a public figure. [i.e. Do not use pictures of yourself, friends, non-famous cosplayers, or random people you find on the internet who do not purposely put themselves out there.]
You are not using the first and/or last name of the actor/character you are using as your PB or any character that actor has played, within reason.
The chosen image makes sense and is consistent with your character. If you are using an image of a person (photo, drawing, etc.), they must be very close to your description of your character and must be of an appropriate age for the age you've given your character. That means you should not use a 30 year old Playby for your 18 year old, or an image of a labrador to represent your Antican, etc.
All images must show the traits of your characters' species that would be visible in the picture, within reason. We don't usually get on anyone for minor things like face ridges, but would not, for example, accept an un-manipped picture for an Orion or Andorian. (There are several people who offer manips and alterations in their site shops.)
Propriety. All images used on the board should be PG or better. Images of Starfleet personnel should be in keeping with a certain level of professionalism (i.e. your cadet should not be lingerie or your officer should not be hanging out with their shirt off). You may link to more explicit photos in your character profile by providing a text link that clearly says (NSFW) next to it.
Build a Background
When creating a background for your character, make sure to take their species into account. If playing a human, just keep in mind that this is the year 2390 and that technology and culture have advanced about 375 years. Try to incorporate futuristic elements into your background and not to rely too heavily on modern culture. At the same time, don't fall prey to stereotypes of other earth cultures. A common one is Japanese and Chinese culture that is based around sometimes offensive stereotypes or outdated concepts, rather than reality.
If playing an alien, make sure to read carefully through canon information and adhere to it. Anything on Memory Alpha is considered direct and unchangeable canon. You can play with what you find on Memory Beta a little bit, within reason. Make sure your alien's background is not too human-like. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you couldn't change your character to a human and keep the majority of your background exactly the same. Add elements of your character's species and culture throughout their background and information.
You may not know yet what you plan to do with your character after their initial application as a civilian is approved. However, it's good to keep the following in mind when constructing your background for them:
Starfleet will not accept anyone who is mentally unstable or physically incapable of performing their job without supervision/assistance. As technology is so advanced, both things are nearly obsolete anyway.
Crewmen (those who enlist without going through Starfleet Academy) must be at least 24 with at least 5 years of experience in their field. We prefer them to be older and have more experience, however.
Starfleet cadets must be at least 18, though most are between 25 and 35 standard years.
Ensigns must be at least 24 and have graduated from SFA. Add roughly 5 years on to that for each subsequent rank and keep in mind how old they will need to be for whatever rank you're wanting to work them up to. For example if you are shooting for the rank of captain, make them at least 40 years old. We will allow some manipulation of their backgrounds later on as you progress, but we want to make sure we don't have 25 yr old captains running around.
Characters may not hide their past from Starfleet, so create something you feel Starfleet will accept
Civilians are exempt from all of the above, so if you want to keep them a civilian, have fun. (Just make sure you don't GM Starfleet when creating their background)
Pick an Image
This can be a very important part of getting a feel for your character. You can choose real photos of celebrity/public people, photo manips, or artwork. We have several artists on the site, so check the shops and requests forum.
For humans, try some of these sites (the downside to them is that you're going to get some of the most commonly used faces):

Character quarters and dorms will be assigned soon. I'm just running a little later on it than I'd hoped. ^^ The Dalnyr and Bastagia are now in Sol System and all of your characters are unlocked to post there, so have fun!
